About The Charles Landis Hurst Scholarship for Leadership & Service
Charles Landis Hurst
Personal Life
Charles Landis Hurst was born on August 8, 1947, as the first of nine children to Clementine and Kenneth Hurst Sr. In 1983, he met the love of his life, Sybil (Hayes) Hurst, and they married on June 17, 1984. Their love has flourished for over 42 years. Together, they welcomed three sons: Emanuel, Joseph, and David. Charles is also a proud grandfather to three grandsons: Asher Alexander Charles, Caleb Emmanuel, and Christopher Josiah.
Career
Charles began his professional journey as a U.S. Army Staff Sergeant, serving during the Vietnam War from 1969 to 1971. He worked as a military police officer and dog handler, with his guard dog, Hobo, assisting him in patrolling and protecting military personnel and equipment. After his military service, Charles dedicated over 25 years to the United States Postal Service as an Automotive Mechanic and Supervisor.
“There is no limit to the good a man can do if he doesn’t care who gets the credit.”
Life-Changing Events & Lessons
Prior to meeting his wife, Sybil, Charles experienced an unexpected life event that left him overwhelmed by guilt and emotional pain, ultimately leading to a stay in a mental health facility. One day, as he walked through the facility with his head bowed low, an observer shouted, “It cannot be that F***ing bad. Lift your head up, man!” This statement reignited his desire for a better life and made Charles push harder for his recovery. The prayers of his younger brothers and fellow believers from The Way International Biblical Research, Teaching, and Fellowship Ministry played a pivotal role in his recovery. Through therapy, Charles sought continued improvement until he felt God’s complete and total deliverance in his life. Reflecting on his journey, he emphasizes, that success emanates from "My Believing." When asked about his greatest accomplishment, Charles simply states, “the love of my life, Sybil.” This love has enabled him to embrace his roles as a husband, father, grandfather, and countless others (e.g. mentor, minister, volunteer) while also placing his trust in God into daily action.
Service & Impact
Charles is inspired by a statement from former Coca-Cola CEO Robert W. Woodruff, which was prominently displayed on President Reagan’s desk: “There is no limit to the good a man can do if he doesn't care who gets the credit.” Since 1986, Charles has volunteered as a Bible study and fellowship coordinator with The Way International Ministry. For over 40 years, he has equipped others to embrace their deliverance, faith, and service to God. To enhance his ability to minister, Charles completed an advanced course on the godly way of abundance and power for daily living. His ministry has positively impacted hundreds of lives and numerous leaders across the United States, including four Fostering Futures Foundation Inaugural Board Members who are trailblazers in real estate, education, social work, public health/ service, medicine, and non-profit organizational development. Charles believes that one's impact can create a ripple effect, like a "pebble tossed in the ocean," spreading widely and without limits, especially when one does not seek personal glory.
In addition to his military and ministry service, he volunteered for six years on the local school council at Horace Mann Elementary and South Shore School of Entrepreneurship. Charles’ philosophy is, “A parent in the presence of a teacher causes the teacher to teach.” Children who lack guidance from a loving home are like “bent-nails”. Thus, teachers must first attempt to straighten the nails to effectively drive home the learning.” Charles is willing to do what it takes to help all children receive the best educational opportunities. For these reasons, we have named this scholarship in honor of our hero.
